Elantris was pretty freaking legit.

  • It’s clear that this is an early book, and Sanderson recycles themes.1 The main characters here have clear echos with Mistborn – it’s as if Mistborn is an expanded version of Elantris. Arguably not as successful because it’s not as concise.

  1. I never quite understood why recycling themes is such a sin among writers, e.g. criticism of Brian Jacques. The similarity is comforting; the theme is what makes them so enthralling in the first place. But maybe I’m just too sentimental. [return]
